Summary:
The Catholic University "Our Lady of the Good Counsel" and a group of nine students participated in a global university initiative proposed by the US State Department and Facebook. The initiative is called Peer to Peer: Challenging Extremism (P2P) Facebook Global Digital Challenge and is designed to combat the spread of hate, prejudice and online extremism, promoting tolerance, understanding, problem solving and empathy among young people through the design and implementation of positive social media campaigns.
The campaign “You’ve got the power!”, is a result of the growing social phenomenon of bullying and cyberbullying in Albania. Nine secondary and high schools, in four towns of Albania took part in a comprehensive study on in-real-life bullying and cyberbullying and 140 studentsresponded anonymously to a questionnaire on this topic.
The project focused on the target group of preteens (9-12-year-old) and teenagers (13-18-year-old), apparently active on social media and highly exposed to in-real-life bullying and cyberbullying. Other target group were: parents, teachers, psychologists, school directors, main actors (groups of interests, NGO) and the silent majority.
Activities made on social media as well as traditional mass media helped to increase awareness against this phenomenon and disseminate the questionnaire findings and direct activities. Offline activities include working with schools in the local community through information, prevention and intervention in the viewpoint of some parties (teaser, victim, observer). The project helped solve specific cases of bullying and cyberbullying in Albania.
