Title of the project: Microcredit in Albania, an instrument of social cohesion within the EU context
Acronym: MAISCO-EU
Program: Erasmus Plus (Jean Monnet Module)
Start date: 01.10.2025
End date: 30.09.2028
Summary
At the European level, microcredit has become a key policy instrument to tackle social and financial exclusion, foster self-employment, and support micro-enterprises. The EU has long promoted microfinance through programs such as the Employment and Social Innovation Program (EaSI) and the European Social Fund (ESF). Looking ahead to the 2021 - 2027 multiannual framework, this commitment continues with initiatives like InvestEU and ESF+.
In the face of economic crises and rising inequality, the importance of microfinance has grown considerably. Yet, across Europe, many individuals and micro-enterprises remain excluded from traditional financial systems, leaving a substantial unmet demand for accessible financing solutions.
The MAISCO-EU Jean Monnet Module addresses this challenge by introducing an academic curriculum focused on microcredit and ethical finance, tailored to the Albanian context. The program aims to align with EU standards and policies while responding to Albania’s pressing need for social cohesion. Small entrepreneurs - particularly young people - are often excluded from conventional financial circuits, and microcredit can provide them with vital opportunities for growth.
Beyond teaching and research, the module also seeks to promote broader awareness and adoption of microcredit in Albania, where the instrument is still underutilized. Activities will involve not only students, but also local and national stakeholders, economic and political decision-makers, and representatives of small and medium-sized enterprises.
